Pareja was enslaved by famous Spanish artist Diego Velazquez and began painting after he won his freedom. Flight into Egyptis the earliest known painting by Pareja and is included in a groundbreaking exhibition of the artist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York this spring.
