Description

Lighting Design with Michiko Sakano and Jan Mollet is happening on Tuesday,August 01,2023 at 05:00PM EDT to Saturday,August 05,2023 at 09:00PM EDT at UrbanGlass with tickets starting at $1010.

We encounter lighting in every space we enter - it sets the atmosphere of a room through intensity, color, and form. Moving quickly through experiments, we will mock up lighting ideas from day 1 onward by exploring the different effects of shape, material, and hardware. This fun and fast-paced class will cover: basic electrical wiring, hardware, assembly, making your own blown glass parts, as well as collecting found/miscellaneous parts to light up. Demonstrations will include introductions to researching lamp parts, ordering prefabricated wiring sets, blowing your artwork according to the specs/working with glass fabricators (see below), cold working, wiring, and installation.

Students who have previous experience and are comfortable in the hotshop will have access to make their own glass lamp parts. Any students new to glassblowing will work directly with the teaching team to fabricate one or two components based on schematic drawings. Students are encouraged to use found objects as well to create their vision. Outside of class time, there will be a coordinated trip to shop for parts for your project on Canal Street.

What to Expect: Again - this class will not cover introductory glassblowing, there will be NO instruction of how to create blown glass parts yourself if you do not already have the skills. However, if you are interested in lighting, come from a design/product/art background, this is an excellent class for you to experience glass fabrication and have your ideas made.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the flat studio, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 1pm-4pm. Additional glassblowing time will be conditional on student experience.

Demonstrations will cover basic lighting information, and students will be encouraged to work quickly through ideas, maquettes, and materials. The teaching team are not certified electricians, expect to work through creative ideas and problem solve designs, but not explore the specifics of UL listing. Read more about how to prepare for class on ourRegistration Info page.

Eligibility: Open to all levels, ages 14 and up.
