RUN FOR SAM

In 2021 I ran the NYC marathon to raise money for breast cancer research in honor of my sister in law (Sam) who had just been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

It’s hard for me to describe my relationship with Sam. On paper she’s my sister in law but the real truth is I see her as my real sister/best friend. We spend a big portion of our weeks together, we speak on the phone every day, I’m constantly going to her to seek advice, most importantly she’s the mother of my best friend (BEN) who brings us all the most joy. If you’ve been lucky enough to meet Sam you will know she is the best wife, best mother, best sister, best friend and best daughter you could ever imagine. She always puts everyone else first, she manages to smile and laugh even on her hardest days and never backs away from the challenge she faces. She is so BRAVE!

I wish I could update you with the news of Sam’s scans showing no evidence of disease but unfortunately that’s not the case. Sam continues to fight and will do so for the rest of her life. The reality is that metastatic breast cancer does not have a cure and there are a limited number of treatments. 44,000 people will die from it this year. But it is because of research that nine new drugs were approved over the past seven years. It is because of research that those with metastatic disease are living longer and that Sam is able to have more time with those that she loves. This is why research is so important, you never know what big breakthrough is around the corner or what new findings will be discovered. It is fundraisers like this that help fund all of the lifesaving treatments for people fighting this disease. Sam will never be cancer free but research will make it possible for her to live the longest and fullest life.

This year I’m going to be running the NYC Marathon again for Sam in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). My goal is to raise $50,000 for BCRF to help them continue the amazing work they do. That’s 1,000 hours of research.
