Chick Corea was one of the most beloved jazz artists in the history of the genre. When he passed away unexpectedly last year, he left behind a treasure trove of recorded performances and legions of superfans. Many of his compositions have become "standards" of the jazz repertoire that are performed routinely by musicians around the world.
But among his least-performed compositions are gems that he wrote for large ensembles that included rhythm sections, brass, and strings. This very special concert will feature a delightful array of that music, performed by a group of the Bay Area's most outstanding musicians.
The core of the group will be Charged Particles, the Bay Area’s favorite funky Latin jazz trio. They have toured Indonesia, the U.K., Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, and have performed in the U.S. at famed jazz clubs including Yoshi’s, Birdland, Blues Alley, and in hundreds of other venues over their 30+ years of music-making. The band recently sold out Birdland in NYC with Bay Area tenor saxophonist Tod Dickow and jazz superstar Randy Brecker, playing new arrangements of compositions by Michael Brecker that were recorded by the quartet (saxophone, piano, bass, drums) on the CD, “Live at the Baked Potato!” (Summit Records).
Dickow is a winner of the Outstanding Soloist Award from Downbeat Magazine, and was named “one of the best saxophonists in the world” by Jazz Life Magazine. He captured the essence of Michael's spirit on the instrument – Brecker’s biographer, Bill Milkowski, said, “the sheer force of Dickow’s lines lift the entire band, while his passionate intensity and Breckerian authority immediately command attention.”
Downbeat Magazine called the group “something special” and “inventive, invigorating, mesmerizing, beautiful, virtuosic, and lyrical.” Their CD of Brecker compositions was named one of the best CDs of 2021 in Jazzwise Magazine, JazzTimes Magazine, the Jazz Journalists Association, the 16th Annual Jazz Critics Poll, and more. Milkowski said the recording is “staggering in its authenticity.” Randy Brecker said the recording is “smoking and intense from beginning to end.” And Downbeat said it offers “exciting, satisfying stuff”.
Don’t miss this exciting premier of amazing repertoire.
