The High Museum of Art is one of the most popular museums in all of Atlanta, and for great reason! With photography, decorative arts and design, African, European, American, modern and contemporary, folk and and self-taught art, there are so many different amazing and beautiful types of art to appreciate at the High.

Their permanent collection holds over 17,000 objects and it is growing. The High is one of the country’s leading museums and has distinct art that can only be appreciated here. You might want to plan on taking an entire day to explore this museum.

If you’re a lover of the contemporary art, you have to check Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia!  This museum houses pieces from local artists in Georgia, to artists from around the world. It was founded in 2000 and has grown from 250 works by 110 Georgia artists to now 1,300 works of art.

They add on about 50-100 different pieces every single year. They also usually have about 15 exhibitions every year. With art constantly being added to this permanent collection as well as them switching up the exhibitions, this is one you can visit multiple times a year and always be able to see something different.

Museum of Design Atlanta is a museum that focuses on all things design! It is the only museum in the Southeast that specializes on just design. From fashion design, to photography, to architectural design, this museum has it all.

Located in the Midtown Arts district, this museum is also dedicated to making the world a better place. They are currently partnering with 100 Black Men of Metro North Atlanta and DeKalb County to help families in need of financial assistance by helping provide scholarships to their children.

If you live close to Emory University, you have got to check out the Michael C. Carlos Museum on campus! This museum includes pieces from all over the world, including Greece, Egypt, North and South America, and more. Ranging from art from 1876 to the present, this museum holds history from all over. In 2019, this museum celebrated 100 years of existing!

With so many educational opportunities for students, faculty, and visitors to check out here, you cannot walk away from this museum not learning something. This is definitely the museum for the history buff!

Located on the historic Spelman College campus, Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has beautiful art showcased for all art lovers to enjoy. Founded in 1996, this museum captures culture and history from pieces dating back to the 1940s.

With more than 350 objects on display,  Spelman has collected art from the African Diaspora from alumnae, artists, trustees, and more. Representing African art from Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and other areas in Africa, this museum encompasses the beauty of African art.

Oglethorpe Unviersity’s Museum of Art is another great space to visit if you’re looking for a museum on campus! OUMA is the only small liberal arts university in the Southeast that shows nationally and internationally recognized exhibitions. Opened in 1993, this museum covers 7,000 square feet, leaving tons of space for many works of art.
