How to Celebrate Juneteenth in Jacksonville

A Story By

Juneteenth is the longest-running African-American holiday celebrated in the United States. After the Civil War ended, enslaved people in the country’s southwestern states like Texas were not made aware of their freedom until news of liberation reached them on June 19, 1865. A symbol of liberty having reached all enslaved people in the United States, Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when emancipation was formalized after the end of the Civil War.

What began mainly with church and family celebrations in 1866, Juneteenth spread throughout the African American community and has since become recognized as a National Holiday. Today, you can find many ways to celebrate Juneteenth right here in Jacksonville’s diverse neighborhoods!
