Flick It Up At These Awesome Murals In Philadelphia

A Story By

Philadelphia has a thriving art scene, and you don’t even need to go to one of the city’s many museums to take it in! Snap some Instagram-worthy photos and take in plenty of history and culture by visiting our favorite murals in Philadelphia. Embark on a self-guided tour to go at your own pace, or book a guided tour through Mural Arts Philadelphia to walk a set route and get your questions answered by an expert.

Experience the beauty of fall’s changing leaves any time of year when you take in David Guinn’s 2012 masterpiece, “Autumn Revisited.” The colorful natural scene, which covers two walls, is one of the most stunning murals in Philadelphia. Once you’re finished taking selfies, there are several benches nearby to rest and enjoy the piece. If you’re artistically inclined and have extra time in the area, take a class at Fleisher Art Memorial, one of the oldest nonprofit community art schools in the United States.

Visit the mural any time from sunrise to sunset.

Fleisher Art Memorial hours:

Monday | 9:00am–9:00pm
Tuesday | 9:00am–9:00pm
Wednesday | 9:00am–9:00pm
Thursday | 9:00am–9:00pm
Friday |  9:00pm–4:00pm
Saturday | 9:00pm–3:00pm

📍 Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St, Philadelphia, PA 19147

The origin story of this art piece alone, to say nothing of its wonderfully bright colors and fantastical scope, is enough to land it on our list of the best murals in Philadelphia. “How to Turn Anything into Something Else” is a product of the skills and imagination of 13 professional artists and 31 art students between the ages of 10 and 15. The students engaged in several collaborative exercises in order to create all of the creatures and scenes that are now part of the mural. The project was intended to show the students that anything they envision can become reality.

“Floating Dogwood” is one of the newest murals in Philadelphia; artists Polly Apfelbaum and Michele Tremblay completed it in January 2021. When Michele was battling cancer in Jefferson Hospital’s oncology ward across the street, her room looked out on a blank wall. After being released, she and Polly were inspired to give other patients and hospital staff, along with the rest of the local community, a more beautiful view. The mural’s painted flowers are meant to lift patients’ spirits in place of live plants, which present a risk of infection to oncology patients.

The Phillies Mural

Philadelphians are famous (perhaps even infamous) for their passionate support of the city’s sports teams. Sports fandom is an integral part of the local culture, and David McShane’s “Phillies Mural” celebrates everything that makes Philadelphia’s professional baseball team great. If you really want to soak in the essence of Philly culture, it should be on your itinerary of murals to visit in Philadelphia. Scenes depicted include the Phillies’ two World Series victories, top players throughout the team’s history, and the Phillies mascot–the Phanatic–in all of his green, fuzzy glory. This mural is centrally located and easy to see from the Walnut Street Bridge, Schuylkill River Trail, and nearby highway I-76.

Light of the Northeast

Murals in Philadelphia aren’t limited to Center City! Venture to Bustleton Avenue to get photos with “Light of the Northeast,” which features the Statue of Liberty and the word “love” translated into 25 languages. The mural covers a wall of a former factory, and the artists used an existing tower creatively by making it the spot for Lady Liberty’s torch. Like many other murals in Philadelphia, “Light of the Northeast” is a collaborative effort: local elementary school students helped with its design.
