From famous skate parks, local cuisine, show-stopping performances and more. There’s always something new to learn about this city. Jacksonville is the Most Populous City in Florida

If no other fun facts about Jacksonville stick out to you, maybe this one will. To many people’s surprise, Jacksonville is the most populous city in all of Florida! Having consolidated its entire county in 1968, Jax is of considerable size. Because of all the extra territory, it’s the most populous city in Florida as well as the biggest city by area in the continental U.S.!

Jacksonville's Original Name was Cowford

Jacksonville is known by many names, from Jax, Bold City and the distant yell of DUVAAAL. But did you know our city was initially named Cowford? Thankfully, it was renamed after President Andrew Jackson in 1822. Do you think if we were still known as Cowford, we would be the Cowford Cows instead of the Jacksonville Jaguars? Who’s to say.

Jacksonville Hosted the Super Bowl in 2005

Perhaps one of the most interesting and fun facts about Jacksonville is this. Although the Jacksonville Jaguars have yet to make a Super Bowl appearance, the city hosted the event in 2005 for the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX. Here’s hoping we host again one day, but this time for the Jags.

For all of our skate fanatics, one of the best fun facts about Jacksonville is regarding local-favorite, Kona Skate Park. Kona is the oldest privately-owned skatepark in the world and has been open since 1977. The park is so famous that even Tony Hawk has skated here! In fact, the park is even highlighted in Tony Hawk’s video game, Pro Skater 4. 1.

The St. John's River Flows North

Of course when you think of Jacksonville, many people’s first thought is the iconic St. Johns River. The gorgeous waterway is the escape for many during hot Summer days, providing a quiet escape as well as picturesque views for some of the most popular restaurants and businesses in Jax. But, what many don’t know is that this famous river actually flows North, instead of South! This is because it’sheadwaters are a mere 27 feet higher in elevation than where it ends – dropping approximately one inch per mile over the course of 310 miles. This slow drop in elevation also makes it one of the “laziest” rivers in the world.
