Houston Local Love List: January Edition

A Story By

Happy New Year Houston! We can’t believe January is finally here. We are SO ready to kick start the new year by highlighting our favorite local businesses with our January Local Love List.

Make sure to bookmark this page and check back next month for a brand new list of our favorite local businesses. Have a business you’d like featured in our Local Love List?  Send us a DM via Instagram or Facebook, we would love to feature you!

We love the story of how The Waffle Bus started, 10 years ago. From food truck to brick and mortar, they now have not one, but TWO locations open. You can find them in The Heights and at their newly opened location in Montrose.

Stop by for their famous chicken and waffles but also their Dole Soft Serve, sweet waffles, milkshakes, ice cream, and more! They have a mix of sweet and savory to satisfy all the cravings!

To infinity, and HOUSTON! Calling all you Pixar fans! We are SO excited for this new addition to Discovery Green. There are over 18 holes all inspired by some of our favorite Pixar movies and characters.

Bring the kids, or go for a date night for Pixar Putt after dark, which starts after 7 pm for ages 18+. Pixar Putt is here through March 20, 2022, and tickets are only available for online purchase.

📸 Chevron Houston Marathon

It’s that time of year for the annual Chevron Houston Marathon. With thousands of runners and spectators, it is one of the largest single-day sporting events in Houston!

For those that have been training and/or the spectators, the Chevron Houston Marathon & Aramco Houston Half Marathon are both on Sunday, January 16, and the We are Houston 5k presented by Aramco and Chevron is on January 15. We will be rooting for you Houston!

The 5k starts at McKinney and Crawford, the Marathons start at Congress & San Jacinto.

The 28th Annual MLK Grande Parade is scheduled for January 17 in midtown Houston. The Parade’s theme “Social Inclusion” will articulate and emphasize our Nation’s strengths through our diversity.

There will be more than 300 performance groups including 30 marching bands from across the Nation and will feature The United States Air Force Presidential Honor Guard from Washington D.C. If you can’t make it to the parade then stay tuned to The CW 39-Houston as it will be televised live.

📍Elgin & San Jacinto

Harold’s is located in the heart of The Heights on 19th street. Founder and Owner, Alli Jarrett renovated the 95-year-old building that formerly housed “Harold’s in the Heights,” an iconic clothing store. Harolds opened in 2013 and provides guests with Southern Hospitality and delicious Southern Cuisine for weekend brunch, lunch, happy hour, and dinner.

We highly recommend dining on their rooftop terrace because you get an amazing view of 19th street!

Lei Low Bar is a hidden gem in The Heights that opened back in 2014. It’s a rum and tiki bar with vibrant Polynesian decor. Stop by for some Mai Tai’s, daiquiris, and flammable drinks! Bonus, there’s an outdoor patio too!

On your way out don’t forget to take a photo with their Aloha mural!

Escape the city hustle and head to Brenner’s on The Bayou. Located on Houstons’ Buffalo Bayou near Memorial Park, find a 2 story dining room with amazing views from every table. On the menu, you will find steak and seafood.

Save this spot for your next date night or celebratory dinner.

If working out or trying new things were both on your new year’s resolutions, check out Republic Aerial Yoga! It’s a boutique-style experience with a variety of Aerial Fitness, Pilates, and Yoga.

We had a chance to try a class and we have to say we felt amazing after class! So give a class and try and let us know how you feel afterward!

📍Republic Aerial Yoga

Sweet & Boozy has only 2 locations, 1 in Texas and 1 in New York. They focus on Ice Cream Confections for the kids and Booze-infused creations for the adults. We think it’s the best of both worlds! Try some of their thundershakes, or boozy thundershakes and flights! And make sure to get an instagram-worthy photo of your sweets with their cute sign!

Calling all you rockstars and fitness enthusiasts! If you are looking for a new workout that’s fun, but also effective check out POUND!

Throughout the class, you will be using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising. POUND is designed for all fitness levels while transforming drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out.
