Spring into the March Houston Local Love List

A Story By

We don’t need a leprechaun or a rainbow to remind us we are lucky. We live in Houston! This city is full of so many wonderful people and places to discover.

As one of the largest cities in the country, we attract all kinds of businesses, but we really want to shine a light on those that have always belonged to HOU. They are what makes our community unique and we want to make sure  they are getting the attention they deserve!

Here are 10 more of our local favorites you should check out ASAP.

We love the story behind this pub, and if you are looking for a great Irish spot around Houston, you would be hard-pressed to find a place more authentic than The Goose’s Acre.

For over a century, The Goose’s Acre was a community hub in Cork, Ireland, and the pub stood directly in front of the space. It was handed down from father to son over the years, providing a warm and inviting place for locals and new friends to meet and enjoy a pint.

In 2005, the establishment was forced to close to make way for new developments. After so many years of service and memories, it was heartbreaking, but two gentlemen from our neck of the woods fell in love with the bar and proposed they buy it and relocate it.

Today, The Goose’s Acre has been reassembled along The Woodlands Waterway, and although it may be a world away from where it started, it’s held onto the history and heritage that made it so special in Ireland.

Grab a pint, some Irish comfort food, and be transported.

Texans know ice-cream for the simple fact that it’s hotter than a frying pan most days out of the year, and we’re always looking for ways to cool down. We have our go-to’s we can gab from H-E-B, but we love treating ourselves to an artisan scoop.

Flower and Cream is mixing up small-batch flavors with premium and locally sourced ingredients, giving you a true taste of Houston. They’re making all of their goodies in-house–that includes their mix-ins and baked goods.

Order Unicorn Tracks, Cereal Milk, Raspberry Tres Leches, or Rainbow Cake if you are looking for some delectable, unique flavors (or just get them all like in the pic).

They also have coconut-based vegan options for our friends that are avoiding dairy. We also recommend you nag one of their macaron ice cream sandwiches before they sell out. Y-U-M!

Where are all our crazy plant people?!

There is nothing wrong with bringing a little nature indoors or going a little nuts planting your spring garden.

Buchanan’s is one of those nurseries where you are going to leave with more than you planned on just because their selection is so good! You’re bound to find more plants you never knew you needed in your life.

They have a fantastic variety of indoor plants, perennials, succulents, herbs, and so much more! Their atrium is definitely one of those happy little corners of Houston you have to check out.

On top of the selection, Buchanan’s also has a very knowledgeable and helpful staff.  We’ve enjoyed reading through their blog for horticulture tips and ideas to make your plants thrive.

Every year, we get excited, jump the gun, and we’re always a little disappointed with the scrawny little crawfish we get that first month of the season, but we can’t help it! They’re just so good that we don’t want to wait! This month is usually when the season ramps up, though, and you can start to expect some monsters in your boil.

Half the year, Boil House is an unassuming little building over in The Heights with not much going on, but you can expect their little space to be busy every day until they sell out during crawfish season.

They have mudbugs delivered straight from Louisiana daily (“From pond to table”), and you have the option of buying them live and boiling them up at home or let them put their years of experience to work to serve you some of the best-seasoned crawdads this side of the state line.

This shop and shop owner, Lyndsey Zorich, has serious style!

The Avenue carries a truly gorgeous array of housewares and clothing, as well as some of the most darling kids’ clothes. Some pieces are from designers you know, and others are from lines you quickly want to become familiar with.

We love keeping an eye on their Instagram page for some ensemble inspiration and drooling over the picture-perfect tablescapes they layout. Speaking of which, if you see one of those setups that you love but realize you would only really use it once, they also offer small-scale rentals for dinner parties.  Just ask!

They have typically done business online, but they moved/opened their office and showroom off of Westheimer right amidst the pandemic. Go show them some of that local love and find some inspiration for your home and wardrobe.

This is southern comfort food at its best!  Fried green tomatoes? Check! Something wrapped in bacon? Absolutely!  Chicken fried? Oh, yeah! And the key to their delicious cuisine…they make it all from scratch.

State Fare has whatever you need to satiate those down-home cravings. On the weekends, they also offer a killer brunch menu featuring yummy dishes like crawfish and creole benedict and smoked brisket hash.

It’s hard to top their brunch menu, but the happy hour menu stands as a worthy rival.  Monday through Friday (3PM–6PM), you can pop in to enjoy some specials on some of their signature dishes and cocktails.

Now that things are warming up, we can’t wait to try all of their frosé flavors!

Sipping cocktails in a hammock isn’t just for beaches. At Axelrad, you can order yourself a margarita and let the day’s worries slip away as you lounge around in their garden area.

If you get hungry, they make sure you have options.  Axelrad is directly next door to Luigi’s Pizzeria, and you can have them delivered straight to your table. They also have a great lineup of food trucks that they book to park out front. If that still doesn’t do it for you, bring your own food, they’ll supply the drinks.

Axelrad always seems to have something going on. Check our events page to keep up to date, but you can expect regular movie nights, comedy shows, markets, live music, and more.

On top of the good things people have to say about the bar itself, the staff helped get free meals out to those in need during the snowstorm. We have to love a business that pays it forward!

If you have never been here, we know what you’re thinking, “Did they really just tell me where to buy a hammer and some work gloves in the Love List?” While we enjoy a good DIY project, the name of this HOU original is more of a nod to their beginnings than a reflection of what they have become over the last 80 years.

These days you can still pick up hardware, but you will probably be distracted by all of the kitchen goods, gifts, outdoor essentials, stationery, jewelry, and snacks they also have stocked.

As if the selection alone didn’t provide enough of a shopping experience, they also host various vendors at their own farmer’s market Thursday afternoons at their Westheimer location.

You can also sign up to up your culinary game by taking their knife skills classes on-site, where you can learn to chop, dice, and julienne like a pro.

See…so much more than just nails and padlocks!

Don’t you just love a good success story about good people?

The Blairs started the original bakery in 1999, but as word got out about how delicious the pies and tomato basil soup were, and they quickly outgrew the space.

They figured opening a second restaurant would help keep up with all these customers, but even that didn’t do it. In 2006 they realized even with both locations, it wasn’t cutting it, and they were going to have to move again, so they combined both shops and now they can almost keep up with the line of customers out their doors.

Even with the success, the Blairs have maintained a space that is warm and inviting. You feel like you are family when you dine at The Sunflower. They have always focused on creating something to be proud of rather than making a profit, and you can taste it in every bite of waffle or sandwich.

Have you ever tried rock climbing? Don’t worry, even if you haven’t, inSPIRE Rock Indoor Climbing has something for all skill levels. They offer novice/kid-friendly routes that allow you to start understanding the best practices as you go, training walls for competitive climbers, and something for everyone in between. They also rent out all of the gear you will need so you can be sure you’re ready to go.

This facility has so much to offer! With over 42,000 square feet of climbing space and walls up to 63′ tall, you can keep switching up your routes, so you never get bored. They also have a pro hop on-site if you feel ready to take your climb outdoors, as well as a yoga studio so you can make sure you stay limber.

We love the idea of heading here to switch up your date night routine, or for a fun activity, the whole family can enjoy.

P.S. They are also offering spring break camps for kiddos if you’re looking for something to keep them busy.
