Welcoming Spring with the May Local Love List

A Story By

Hey Houston, we’re back with a whole new batch of local faves for our May Local Love List!

Each month, we highlight 10 local businesses we love to support! From restaurants to markets to bars, we aim to spotlight the homegrown businesses that make our city so great.

If you spot our picks around town, give them a shout-out and let them know Stuff to Do in Houston sent you!

Table of Contents

Beat the midweek slump with Brass Tacks! Located in East Downtown, this cafe-bar hybrid supports the perfect balance between work and relaxation.

Bring your laptops, books, study guides – whatever you need to get down to “brass tacks!” Grab a booth for hardcore focus, or lounge in any one of their many reading corners, equipped with beautiful plants, lush sofas, and plenty of space to stretch out.

Guests can enjoy a stocked menu of rice bowls, salads, and sandwiches. We like the “Jack Daniels’ bread pudding!”

Good news: Houston Cider Company is open to guests once again! Cider lovers or those who just enjoy a good craft beer, you’ll definitely find something to love when you visit Houston Cider Co.!

As Houston’s first production cidery, Houston Cider Company has grown to service over 300 local businesses with their delicious, unique craft cider.  Made with high-quality fruits, their ciders come in a variety of taste palettes, from dry to sweet.

You can once again visit their Taproom at their Houston Heights to try their “Core Four” (Dry, Cherry, Pineapple Ginger, Rose) or to sample their rotating menu of small-batch creations. We recommend the “Sweet Cherry Pie” or tropical “Passionfruit Hibiscus” cider!

You can find this Heights-area favorite every Saturday & Sunday in Cavatore Italian Restaurant lot–just look for the tents! You can’t miss one of Houston’s largest farmers’ markets, complete with 30+ vendors of produce, meats, and cheeses.

Though you’ll find a hearty veggie selection, the real star of this farmers’ market is its local cheese, meat, and bread selections. You’ll be able to buy directly from local Houston bakers and dairy farmers, guaranteeing freshness and quality.

Eleanor’s Market is family-owned and run, so you can shop easy knowing you’re supporting Houstonians directly! The market rotates vendors often, so you’ll always find something new to love each weekend.

We love to highlight the companies supporting Houston artists and event planners! Operating in Downtown Houston, Sanman Company hosts a variety of unique Houston parties and experiences from their expansive warehouse studio.

Sanman Company aims to support innovative art, music, design, and event curation by opening its doors to Houston’s creatives and businesses.

If you’re looking for a gourmet hot dog experience, what better place than Good Dog Houston? Their handcrafted hot dogs have since become so popular with Houstonians that the team was able to transition from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar shop back in 2013.

Since then, Good Dog Houston has continued its tradition of buying local and/or handcrafting all of their ingredients, resulting in a delightful menu full of tasty hot dogs, salads, and sides!

Try the Chillin’ Dog (beef & chorizo chili, pickled jalapeños, diced onion, short bus mustard) for a chili dog with a twist. Not into hot dogs? Their menu includes a fun selection of entrees, like the “Chicky Chicky Parm Parm” (fried chicken tenders, house tomato sauce, Oaxaca cheese, parmesan & basil on a garlic bun.) Pair with any one of their craft beers and enjoy!

This boutique ice creamery is powered by a husband + wife team who believe “life’s too short for plain old vanilla!”

milk + sugar prides itself on its quality ice cream and mix-ins, which it crafts in-house with quality ingredients. Each flavor is unique to milk + sugar, and made in small batches to ensure freshness. You won’t find these flavors on the store shelf or in stock for long–so be sure to try your favorites when you spot them!

Our recommendations: a scoop of their Thai Tea, or the “Happy Wife” (cream, almond pound cake.) Ask for the brown butter cone–yum!

Cascabel is a full vegan Mexican restaurant that caters to both plant and meat-eaters alike. Here, they only substitute the meat–not the flavor or the spice! Their traditional, authentic Mexican dishes are made with common vegetables like jackfruit, mushroom, soy, and cauliflower.

All entrees are made fresh in-house from local ingredients including the tortillas and the sides! In addition to a full sweet-savory vegan menu, Cascabel also offers a range of vegan beverages and drinks.

Even the most seasoned meat lover will find something to love at Cascabel! We recommend the classic Chile Relleno or Torta plates–and wash it all down with a Dirty Horchata!
