Tamales in San Antonio*

A Story By

In South Texas, the Holiday Season means it’s Tamal SZN! Honestly, we’re not complaining. The more the merrier!

There are many unique types of Tamales that originate from different locations around Latin America. In San Antonio however, most of the flavors are similar to those that are made in Mexico.

Whether you gather around the kitchen table with your Abuelita (grandma) to make them. (I just like to take pictures and say I helped.)  Or you prefer to pick some after a busy day of Local Holiday Shopping. You’ll always have a sense of comfort and satisfaction after you unwrap and have a few bites.

Here are some of our favorite Delicious Tamales in San Antonio!

Let us know if your favorite made the list by taking pics and tagging us via Instagram. OR start a thread in our Facebook Group. See you there! 🥳

Reminder: Due to COVID-19, we understand there’s not much going on in our city. But don’t worry, there is still plenty of Stuff to Do in San Antonio that can be done while social distancing. Be sure to double-check for any updates on these coffee spots before making plans to head out.

A hidden gem to a few and if you knew about it, you’ve been keeping quiet because this place is worth trying. Sandra’s Mexican Food offers a variety of different dishes, from a Machacado & Egg plate to Enchiladas Ranchers. The Tex-Mex food is very flavorful and the staff is really friendly. Did we mention that the bar is always stacked? Find your faves like Modelo’s or frozen Lime Margaritas for those after-work vibes.

Pork Tamales are seasonal here. You can either opt-in for the Tamal plate that includes your sides of rice and beans. Or you could also grab a dozen or two at $11.99 each for a quick and easy family dinner.

We love tamales but Tortilleria TORTIRICA specializes in making homemade tortillas too! My family’s go-to are their tortillas de harina (flour tortillas). Those tortillas pair well with anything. Use them for breakfast tacos, lunch tacos, or even have one as a snack. (no judging here)

Head out and grab a fresh pack of tortillas, some yummy barbacoa, and of course those authentic tamales. The prices are reasonable and the tastes are always on point. Plus, you’ll always be greeted with a smile when you visit.

Yes, it’s that time of year again when seasonal tamales are back at La Gloria. This San Antonio favorite is now offering tamales made from stone-ground corn in banana leaf. There are 3 different flavors to pick from. You can try chicken in salsa verde, puerco en chile rojo, or black bean & queso fresco.

Personally, I am not a fan of tamales that are wrapped in a banana leaf. However, I’m definitely willing to give them another shot. I’m sure Chef Johny and his staff will not disappoint.

On our way to the Dominio location for those Holiday specials and Happy Hour! We’ve got our eyes on the Hot Cocoa and Jameson with crushed graham crackers.

📍Multiple Locations

If you’re looking for another spot that has tamales any time of the year, Delia’s should be your go-to! They’re conveniently open 7 days a week. They have a drive-thru option and offer 19 types of delicious tamales.

Over the course of 30 years, Delia’s has expanded into the household name that it is now because of the love and dedication she put into making her tamales.

At the moment I’m definitely feeling some Cream Cheese & Jalapeño tamales with a side of Menudo. On our way, Delia!

True San Antonians know about this oldie but goodie. B & B Tamales & Food To Go has been around for 38 years and serves tamales year-round. The staff will always make you feel like a familiar face when you stop by and the tamales are really delicious too!

B & B Tamales have won countless of awards over the years and almost everyone who works there is family. Unfortunately, they are no longer taking big requests because of the busy Holiday Season. You will be able to buy some on a first-come, first-serve basis. I was lucky enough to grab half a dozen of pork and half a dozen of chicken at 1pm on a Monday. Good luck!

Are you in the mood for some exquisite and elevated Mexican cuisine? If you answered yes, you need to make your way to FRIDA Mexican Restaurant & Bar. The food is delicious but very presentable too.

Because the weather calls for it, enjoy some moist Tamales with a side of jazz! In case you want to expand your taste buds, try a Sope de Pulpo but you can never go wrong with the classic Quesabirrias.

FRIDA overall is very Instagrammable. Did we mention the gorgeous, blue Atrium? The vibes are relaxing and the Carajillos definitely help.

Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia

Mi Tierra is offering Tamalada kits that include 5lbs of masa, 2-quart containers (pork or chicken), 1 pkg of hojas, QR code with holiday music, QR code of a video including instructions, and La Gran Tamalada bag.
