Spring is finally here! Trees are re-growing their leaves, flowers are sprouting, and Pittsburgh’s local farmers are preparing to see the first fruits of their labor from last year: actual fruits, of course!
Many of Pittsburgh best’s U-Pick farms are gearing up to welcome guests who want to bring friends and family to spend the afternoon hand-selecting some of the freshest produce around, like strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and even fresh flowers. Here’s what you need to know about finding the best U-Pick farms in Pittsburgh and when they’ll expect their crops to be ready for picking:
The Best U-Pick Farms in Pittsburgh
Since 1865, Trax Farm has been a favorite of Western Pennsylvanian families for getting outdoors and enjoying the bounty of every growing season! Located about 30 minutes south of Downtown, Trax Farms offers several types of U-Pick seasons throughout the year, including strawberries and blueberries in late spring. The farm also has a storefront that is open daily and is stocked with fresh flowers, seasonal produce, baked goods, deli items, and even local wines, beers, and ciders.
Check Trax Farms’ social media to find out when this year’s U-Pick season will begin. Unfortunately, there will be no strawberries this year but we’re excited for the rest of the season!
We’re huge fans of Simmons Farms and the amazing variety of U-Pick options that they offer each year! In the spring, you can cut your own flowers in addition to harvesting strawberries and blueberries, and summer will bring peach season! In the fall, you can pick delicious apples and pumpkins to decorate or even bake with, and you can also pick up some snacks for the whole family in their onsite store.
Many may know Soergel Orchards for their beloved Fall Festival weeks, but the U-Pick produce at one of Pittsburgh’s favorite farms is just as plentiful in the spring and summer! This family-owned farm in Wexford offers strawberry picking, which typically starts in June, as well as blueberry picking in July and August. You can also stock up on local and home-grown goods at their market any time of year!
Bedner's Farm and Greenhouse
Spread out over 40+ acres in McDonald, PA, Bedner’s Farm and Greenhouse started as a small, family-owned farm in Upper Saint Clair and has grown into a favorite destination for U-Pick produce and plants. The 2022 season will kick off in July and last through August and will allow visitors to select their own veggies like beets, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, peppers, and tomatoes straight from the farm. (Veggies available each day will depend on weather and crop conditions.)
Cherries, berries, and bright red and green apples… Norman’s Orchard is one of Pittsburgh’s leading growers of nature’s best candy: fresh fruits! Since 1958, Norman’s Orchard has grown heirloom produce from seeds that have fed the region for generations, with each plant pollinated naturally and without human interference. Stop by their farm in Tarentum around mid-June to see this lovely farm for yourself and take home some of the best fruit in the area!
Triple B Farms
Triple B Farms has it all: fun for families, friendly farm animals, and fresh foods! Just south of Pittsburgh, Triple B Farms is a popular destination (especially for those with little ones) to pick your own strawberries in spring, which typically are available in late May or early June. Of course, Triple B Farms’ robust U-Pick calendar also includes goods such as blueberries, black raspberries, fresh flowers apples, and pumpkins depending on the time of year, and their awesome farm stand and market is always stocked with seasonal produce, baked goods, and home decor and gifts.
Half Crown Hill Orchard
Specializing in U-Pick apples, Half Crown Hill Orchard is planted with dwarf apple trees that utilize a high-density growing system for a plentiful harvest each year! The entire family is welcome, even little ones with a short reach, who can enjoy a fun and safe experience thanks to the dwarf trees. All you have to bring is yourselves — Half Crown Hill will provide you with a bag, and you can choose either a quarter, half, or full peck (that’s about 12 pounds). Best of all, there’s no entry fee! Just pay for the apples you pick and enjoy.
Morris Organic Farm
Morris Organic Farm in Irwin, PA is a one-stop destination for dozens of kinds of certified-organic produce items, from staples like lettuce, potatoes, and tomatoes to less-common items like corn meal, daikon radishes, several varieties of herbs and more than half a dozen squash types. U-Pick produce is available by appointment only, and pricing and product availability will vary in relation to the season. However, when you make your appointment to visit, you can also stock up on other tasty goods like local milk, cheese, eggs, and even grass-fed meats!
Sarver Hill Organic Farm
Greensburg-based farm Sarver Hill Organic Farm is a popular local stop for U-Pick strawberries (by appointment only), but did you know that they also feature a robust Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program? a beloved local spot for strawberry picking. As producers of fruits, beets, peppers, radishes, eggs, meats and more, you can expect a CSA share will all kinds of local, organic goods to take home!
