Montrose is one of our favorite neighborhoods in Houston for so many reasons. There are endless activities to do and foods to eat. In this blog, we want to take you through some of our all-time favorite things to do when we are in the neighborhood.
If you’re into art, photography, nature, or museums, then this blog is for YOU. Keep on reading because this is the best stuff to do and see in Montrose, Houston.

📷 @MenilCollection
The Menil Collection is one of Houston’s best art institutions. One attribute that makes them the best is that admission is completely free because they believe art should be accessible to all. There are several exhibits to enjoy, along with a bookstore, bistro, and park!

When was the last time you enjoyed all 160 acres of Houston’s very own Buffalo Bayou Park? Here, you will get THE BEST views of Houston’s skyline. This’s also a great place for your pup to burn some energy with large and small dog enclosures. There are also unique art exhibits you can enjoy throughout the park.

📷 @artleaguehouston
A lot of the public art pieces you see around town are done by Art League Houston. They host over 100 art classes yearly. These classes are for both artists and non-artists, so don’t be shy–give a class a try!
Fun Fact: ALH is one of the city’s oldest non-profit art organizations.

The Printing Museum gives you a fascinating look at printing history. Here, you can browse through their antique collection of printing equipment, rare books, and newspapers. You can also participate in interactive workshops and tours.

📷 @stageshouston
About four decades ago, this company got its start in a basement. Stages Theatre puts on amazing original performances and performs classics in ways you’ve never seen before. The theatre is small and intimate, which means every seat is a good seat.
If you love good live theatre paired with live music, check out their schedule here!

Houston doesn’t have a lot of areas that can be considered walkable, but Westheimer is! Here is our favorite Saturday night route:
- Start at The Hay Merchant, the fan favorite craft beer
- Head west, make your way to the vibrant most instagramable bar in the city, Present Company (our personal fave!)
- Next, no-frills jazz bar Catbirds
- Then the king of all cocktail bars, Anvil Bar and Refuge.
- Boondocks, located directly across the street, is your go-to neighborhood hangout with a patio featuring live music, DJs, karaoke, stand-up comedy and bars on two floors
- Down the street you have Pistoleros, our favorite taco & tequila bar with chill vibes and the best happy hour
- End your night at La Grange, another tequila with an expansive two story patio bar

📷 @Rothko_chapel
The Rothko Chapel is a mesmeric art experience with pieces compiled from artist Mark Rothko. The 14 murals that the chapel holds are meant to “give the viewer the power to find their own meaning in the pieces.”
Rothko imagined this chapel as a spiritual space where all people could come together to meditate, worship, and reflect in their own way

The Houston Center for Photography is a small gallery that rotates exhibitions every so often. The center is one large room that takes about an hour to view everything. Great things about this museum are that they have vintage photography and cameras on display along with free admission!
Make sure you give them a visit to see amazing work from local and international artists.
