If you aren’t familiar with Atlanta, you may not know about one of it’s hidden gem’s, Virginia-Highland! This is the perfect spot to go on the weekends if you’re looking for more of a low-key scene with yummy food, great drinks, and great events on the weekend.
Virginia-Highland is a smaller part of town known for really cool bars, restaurants, dessert spots, shopping, fun events, and more! It’s close to some of the most popular destinations in Atlanta, but in a way it’s still tucked away from Atlanta tourists.
There are also a few historic homes from 1910 to the 1930s in this area, making it the perfect combination of historical yet hip and trendy. If you’re visiting and you want to get your local on, this is a great neighborhood to check out! Here are things to do in Virginia-Highland.
📍 Press & Grind
The first stop on our adventure of exploring Virginia-Highland is at Press & Grind! This is also a great place to grab a quick bite to eat as they have a few food options on the menu. There are only a few coffee shops in the area, but Press & Grind is everything you could want and more. Their chai tea was excellent as well as their vanilla latte. Grab a cup and get some work done, or take it to go as you explore the rest of the area.
San Francisco Coffee Roasting Co. is another great coffee spot worth mentioning! They roast their own coffee and they bake most of their own pastries.
📍 YEAH! Burger
There are a few different food spots in Virginia-Highland to check out, but we wanted to highlight one of our favorites: YEAH! Burger! YEAH! Burger may have a line, but it is definitely worth the wait.
You can choose on of their signature burgers, or create your own burger entirely. I got the turkey burger on a wheat bun and it was absolutely delish. The sweet potato fries were also so flavorful. Caroline ordered a beef burger in a lettuce bun and also thought that it was worth all of the hype. They only have one other location – located in West Midtown.
A few other great food spots to check out in Virginia-Highland include Murphy’s, Fontaine’s Oyster House, Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar, D.B.A Barbeque, The Original El Taco, Doc Chey’s Noodle House, and Whiskey Bird. No matter what you’re in the mood for, there are plenty of yummy food options for you to try.
📍Paolo’s Gelato Italiano
If you want some authentic Italian gelato, you should definitely grab a scoop or two of gelato at Paolo’s Gelato Italiano. I got the plain chocolate and was so impressed – it tasted as if I was transported to Venice, Italy in a moment. They also have fun waffle decor for the gelato which makes it a great photo opp.
There are tons of flavors to choose from, including dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate hazelnut, chocolate orange, hot pepper chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, lemon, apricot, and more. These flavors rotate depending on the season. You can check out the full list of flavors here. You will not be disappointed no matter what flavor you choose.
📍 Dark Horse Tavern
Virginia-Highland has a great bar scene. Grab your friends and an Uber and head over here for a night out on the town. There are a few cool bars, including a favorite of ours, Dark Horse Tavern. Dark Horse Tavern has live music, karaoke, and a patio and more to enjoy, making it a great spot to spend a weekend night. It is the recipe for the perfect night out.
Highland Tap, Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar, Diesel Filling Station, George’s Bar & Restaurant, and Neighbor’s Pub are other some of the other awesome spots to check out in the area. This is definitely the place to be on a Friday night.
📍 Virginia-Highland Summerfest
Virginia-Highland also has some great events, including one of Atlanta’s most popular events, the Virginia-Highland Summerfest! Vendors from all over the city and from the U.S. line the streets for the artists market and bands come together to perform live! There is also a 5K Road Race you can take part in if you love to run. Not to mention, this festival also does not skimp out on food. They have tons of food trucks available for you to purchase food from. Bring your kids for Kidsfest as well!
Virginia-Highland also hosts holiday related events, such as the Mardi Gras Block Party, St. Patrick’s Kegs & Eggs, and more!
