Fun Things to Do on a Summer Weekend in Austin

A Story By

Summer is here and we are way too excited about it. (Rain, please go away!) We are here to bring you the best things to do this summer in Austin, most of all that will get you outside and having fun.

Whether you are looking to spend your time on the water or on a patio somewhere, we have you covered with ways to beat the heat in Austin this summer!

APK opened in mid-May last year and has quickly become a favorite spot of ours.

Unlike a lot of kayak and SUP rental locations, APK is located on Lake Travis, not Lady Bird Lake. You can choose between a kayak, pedal kayak, and a SUP board for your time on the water.

I would highly recommend trying out the pedal kayak if you’ve never been on one!

In addition to everything APK offers, Efoil Austin will now be launching from their dock to take guests on an incredible experience like no other.

Face covers are required until out on the water.

🗓 Every Day | 10AM-6PM

📍 1499 Graveyard Point Road, Lakeway, Texas 78734, United States

Who doesn’t love a good boat day? Whether you are looking to hang on a pontoon boat or interested in learning how to wake surf, ATX Boat Rentals has you covered!

They offer wake surfing and pontoon boats with different hourly rates depending on what day you go out. If you are interested in learning to surf the captain will work with you and give you tips and assist when needed!

Pack drinks, snacks, towels, and plenty of sunscreen and head out for a day of fun!

They go out on both Lake Austin and Lake Travis.

🗓 MON–SUN | 9AM–6PM

📍 Lake Austin & Lake Travis

This unique water park is located on Lake Travis and boasts of over two football fields worth of floating obstacles. Enjoy lakefront umbrellas, hammocks, floating picnic tables, beach games, and so much more!

We explored one afternoon and had a blast running through the obstacle course and jumping on the water trampolines. After our fun in the water, we grabbed a beer, played some corn hole, and then finished our drink floating in the water. It was the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon!

Opens May 15th, 2021, Reservation Required

📍 14529 Pocohontas Trail suite a, Leander, TX 78641

4. Eat Ice Cream

Here in Austin, we have so many delicious ice cream shops to choose from. Let’s spend this summer trying them ALL! You in? Check out the round-up of shops below.

Picnics had a major comeback in 2020 and we are not mad about it. We can all appreciate an evening in Zilker Park watching the sunset and taking in the beauty of the Austin skyline.

Grazeology is here to take your picnic to the next level with customized cheese trays. From mini grazing boxes (pictured above), perfect for two, to full-blown grazing tables you could quite literally swim in, they have your cheese needs covered. Bring a bottle of wine along and you are set for the perfect date night, picnic with a good friend, or an evening of peace with yourself!

Looking for more places to picnic than Zilker Park? We have created a guide to the best spots to picnic in Austin so all you need to do is order your Grazeology box and head out to a new picnic spot to enjoy it!

6. Spend the Day at a Hotel Pool

Looking for a day in the sun or a fun staycation? Check out some of the best Austin hotel pool spots that offer day passes for guests. That means you can hang by the pool without paying for a room. Talk about a win-win!

Please visit their websites for more information regarding the COVID-19 precautions they are taking during this time. Many are only accepting reservations due to the limited capacity requirements. Check frequently as updates are made!

If you really need to cool down this summer take a visit to Chaparral Ice rink and just lay down on the ice. Don’t actually do that but come skate around in the cool arena!

Check out their website for more information regarding to COVID-19 protocols and to schedule your time on the ice.

Barton Springs is an Austin classic and you can’t go through summer without stopping by! Swim in the natural spring, tan or picnic in the grass, or even hike the trails. You can also check out their educational exhibit, Splash!, to learn about the biology and history of our beloved Barton Springs.

9. Chill on Summer Patios

We already know there won’t be many events happening over the summer so how are we going to spend our weekends in the hot Texas summer heat? The coolest summertime patios in Austin, that’s how.

These are the patios you need to add to your summer 2020 bucket list!

We fell in love with Treaty Oak when Texas Tipsy Tours took us in 2019 and it quickly became a frequently visited spot for our team. They are taking a number of precautions to ensure everyone’s safety so please follow the protocols they have put in place when visiting.

They are taking full advantage of their 28-acre property allowing outdoor seating only. This is the perfect opportunity to get out and get some fresh air as well as to have the chance to hang out, sip some delicious cocktails, and grab some BBQ from Alice’s Restaurant.

Treaty Oak has and will continue to be a popular spot throughout the summer. If you are looking to avoid people this most likely is not the best spot for you to visit but if you are looking to spend an afternoon out and about Treaty Oak is your spot!

🗓 WED-SAT | 12PM–9PM
🗓 SUN | 12PM-7PM

📍 16604 Fitzhugh Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620
