One of the best parts about the University of Texas is its location. Being in downtown Austin has so many perks, including its proximity to incredible bars, restaurants, things to do, coffee shops, and more! We love when we don’t even have to hop in a car to go somewhere, so we have picked out some of our favorite walkable bars near UT.

Bar Moxy

Located in the Moxy Austin-University Hotel, Bar Moxy is a more upscale option. Order a signature cocktail and enjoy it with friends in the spacious, cozy lobby or the open-air backyard next to the fire pits. Since it’s right off campus, the location is convenient for a post-class break! While you’re at it, be sure to also grab a taco from Zombie Taco, the hotel’s 24/7 food truck-inspired taco counter.

Crown&Anchor Pub

Just north of campus on San Jacinto Boulevard is one of our favorite walkable bars near UT. Crown & Anchor Pub has served the Hyde Park/University neighborhood since 1987 and is a consistent bar of choice for students and those in the neighborhood. With a big beer selection, daily happy hour from 2PM-7PM, pub fare, and a dog-friendly patio, you can’t go wrong with this choice!

Looking for a casual spot to watch the game or enjoy open-mic nights? Posse East is a great pick! This spirited sports bar is located at the edge of Hyde Park on Duval Street, making it the perfect place for happy hour or a tailgate destination.

The Ballroom at Spider House

As the host of some of our favorite food trucks near campus, Spider House really offers the best of both worlds. Try the Arlos Curbside and Lick it Up trucks, while enjoying a drink from their full bar and a live music performance, DJ, or comedy act.

Mockingbird Saloon

This West campus gem features pool tables, darts, and TVs along with draft beers and a full bar, making it the perfect spot for a casual weekend hangout while the game is on. Mockingbird Saloon, formerly The Local, is an intimate pub and a must for UT students and others in the area.

Hole in the Wall

As one of Austin’s oldest live music venues, The Hole in the Wall has made a name for itself and is definitely one of the best walkable bars near UT. With live music every night from 7PM-close, two stages, a beer garden, and a pinball arcade, you’ll quickly fall in love with this Hole in the Wall bar!

The Tavern

Established in 1916 as the Enfield Grocery store, and turned post-Prohibition pub, this Austin favorite has been serving locals for over a century. Instantly recognizable by it’s German-style façade and iconic “air conditioning” sign (left over from a time when it was one of the first places in town to offer this magical invention), it has remained a favorite over time. Revamped in 2018, the current iteration prides itself on preserving the history, while also innovating the fare and supporting the community via utilizing fresh local ingredients. Rumor has it, the oldest patron is a ghost named Emily, and it’s easy to see what has kept her around for decades!

Cain & Abel's

Ask anyone about the best campus bars, and chances are Cain & Abel’s will come up. It is just one of those bars that comes to mind when you think of UT and Longhorn good times. Serving “American Food with a Texas Drawl” since 1991, with plenty of beers on tap, brunch selections,  and private event options for your “next sporting event, alumni event, watch parties, and even corporate recruiting,” this campus institution is definitely still going strong

One of the newer additions to the Campus District bar scene, Otopia Rooftop Lounge literally gives you a fresh new perspective of the area. Enjoy a signature cocktail during their Golden Hour, a version of Happy Hour 1 hour before and after sunset, or get a snack while working on your tan poolside
