Diaries of Divergence consists of three distinct sculpture series arranged in the spirit of a scaled down museum exhibit. Much like a natural history exhibit, “specimens” are organized by biome, and demonstrate the inspiring range of an extraterrestrial lifeform as it has adapted to several different ecosystems of our planet.
This body of work is inspired by the transplant archetype: a person who willingly leaves “home” in search of more opportunity, and thus creates a new home in an alien community; a migrant. This phenomenon is quite commonplace in our Tampa Bay area. To quote Jackie Shane, “Most people are planted in someone else’s soil…I say to them, ‘Uproot yourself; get into your own soil. You may be surprised who you really are.’” Leaving the comfort of familiarity is never an easy task, but sowing roots that have long outgrown its pot is worth the growing pains.
This collection of works is a testament to self discovery, and a love letter to the small communities that lovingly foster that growth.
