Ok let’s be real. We love a solid entrée but it’s the post-meal sweet treat we are truly craving. Lucky for us, Western PA does it oh-so-well with these top spots for desserts in Pittsburgh! Sugar-encrusted waffles, decadent chunks of fudge, lavender-infused buttercream….the dessert scene in Pittsburgh is low-key THRIVING and we cannot get enough. So, whether you’re craving a mid-afternoon treat or just want a lil’ breakfast sundae (we’ve all been there), keep reading for all your sugary needs!
Allow us to introduce you to the Liège waffle: your new favorite sweet treat and one the best desserts in Pittsburgh. The Liege waffle originated in Liege, Belgium and consists of a light, fluffy, mini waffle with rounded edges. A healthy dose of sugar is added to the waffle mix prior to cooking resulting in a deliciously sweet waffle perfect for dessert. Waffallonia in Squirrell Hill makes their waffles from scratch and offers a variety of topping options to make this pastry all the more enticing.
PRO-TIP: Try the Ghent: a waffle slathered with Speculoos spread (tastes like shortbread cookies) and topped with fresh bananas, absolutely mouth-watering. Check out their party packs for a great work party contribution or weekend brunch treat!

Prantl’s Bakery is as iconic to Pittsburgh as the over 446 bridges scattered throughout the city! In 1970, Henry Prantl created the Burnt Almond Torte, moist yellow cake filled with layers of fresh custard and topped with famous Prantl Buttercream and crushed almonds. It’s decadent, it’s buttery, and it’s OH SO good. Since then Prantl’s has been satisfying customers with an assortment of over 100 baked goods and desserts, many of which are customizable.
Their multiple locations throughout Pittsburgh make the bakery a go-to for all of your dessert needs! Don’t believe us? In 2018 The Huffington Post named the Prantl’s torte the best cake in America!! The same list included Levain Bakery cookies….go off Prantl’s, we see you.

If Fudge Farm’s milkshakes were not incentive enough…the indoor swings might be? Like we truly can’t think of a better way to enjoy a Salted Caramel shake or a chunk of double dark chocolate fudge. Once the shock of the swings has passed, a closer look at Fudge Farm’s menu reveals shakes named after local Pittsburgh streets and spots! The Carson Street Deli is not only a fantastic sandwich shop, but also a banana ice cream and vanilla wafer milkshake. The Steel Cactus? A great place to grab a marg and guac OR a chocolate milkshake topped with graham crackers and pretzels. Not sure how we got chocolate from guac but rules don’t apply at Fudge Farm.

Oakmont Bakery has to be one of the most talked about bakeries in the city, even if you have to travel a bit outside of the city for the best sweets. And if you haven’t heard about it, it’s time to pay a visit. Named Best of the ‘Burgh in 2022, Oakmont Bakery has tons of pastry options on standby every day and also takes custom cake order! Don’t let Page Dairy Mart’s location fool you, this O.G. Pittsburgh spot has been serving up cones and shakes since 1951. Located near the train tracks on East Carson street, Page offers all of the classics ranging from soft-serve vanilla to the Yinzer Sundae: vanilla ice cream, hot caramel, and crumbled blondie. Perhaps even better than the food itself are the old-school diner vibes straight out of Grease. Leather jackets and music aside, Page Dairy Mart is the best summer treat in Pittsburgh and their expansive menu means there is something for everyone!

While we don’t choose favorites, some might say we saved the best for last when it comes to Butterwood Bake Consortium in Lawrenceville. The décor itself is worth noting: a cozy coffeehouse inspired by the 1880s Austrian kaffeehouses of the Old West. Think Victorian Era meets the Wild West—a combo we didn’t think could work but it really does. This theme spills over into it’s sweet treats as well. The Consortium delicacies are unlike anything you’ve tried before with eclectic flavors and treats that are as aesthetic as they are delicious. Our favorite? Try the lavender olive oil cake with agave buttercream frosting, so moist and decadent it’s actually absurd.
The Consortium offers more vegan and non-vegan options all of which use completely clean ingredients. Check out their Instagram for a sneak peak of their lovely creations and desserts!
