If you think cheese and a hamburger would taste gouda together, then you’ve come to the right place. Thankfully, us ‘yinzers’ know a thing or two about hamburgers – in fact some might say we practically put the ‘burgh’ in burger! 😉 To honor this classic dish, we put together a list of the the best burgers in Pittsburgh and we promise they won’t disappoint.
It’s always burger o’clock at Over the Bar Bicycle Cafe! This bicycle-inspired bar is known for their burgers, vegetarian dishes and full service bar with a fab happy hour. We tried THE BMX burger, an all-beef patty on a brioche bun topped with special sauce, iceberg lettuce, cheese, full-sized pickles, bacon, and onions. And if you’re wondering, yes it IS as delicious as it looks! In total, OTB has 7 speciality burgers on their menu, as well as, sandwiches, tacos, wraps, salads and more.
“Burgh’ers Brewing is a chef driven smash burger joint and craft brewery focused on local, ethical, and sustainable food & drink.” This fitly-named restaurant sources all of its ingredients from local farmers within a 200-mile radius and their sustainability efforts have earned them a Platinum Designation from Sustainable Pittsburgh, the organization’s highest honor. In addition to craft burgers and beer, patrons are welcomed to BYOB (build-your-own-burger) and Burgh’ers even offers a “Puppy Patty” perfect for man’s best friend!
A balanced diet is a burger from The BeerHive in each hand! Inspired by Mr. Rogers, this family-owned restaurant is a laid-back place where you can grab a bit to eat, drink craft beer and hang out with your pals. You can’t go wrong with any burger on their menu BUT YOU MUST order a frypie as an appetizer! A frypie is a pile (literally) of house-cut fries in a pie pan smothered with toppings of your choice. After all, name a better combo than a burger with fries?!
Voted “Best New Restaurant” in 2018 by Pittsburgh Magazine, Poulet Bleu is an American-style bistro that serves traditional bistro dishes with a twist! They only have one burger option on their menu but we promise its a good one. The Bistro Burger features white onion, American cheese, bread and butter pickles, and lettuce on a toasted sesame seed bun. And as always, the Bistro Burger is served with a side of pomme frites (the fancy way of saying french fries)!
We can’t talk about burgers in Pittsburgh without mentioning Tessaro’s…seriously just look at that picture. With a goal of bringing genuine, authentic and honest burgers to Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood, the restaurant never disappoints. All of their burgers are made on a hardwood grill, using a perfect marble-to-meat ratio, crafted by the in-house butcher! We highly recommend taste-testing the Gourmet Kelly Burger garnished with bacon, grilled mushrooms and onions with your choice of cheese. Another popular choice is the Breakfast Burger topped with an egg over easy and cheese.
The saying goes…suns out, (hamburger) buns out at Stack’d Oakland! This neighborhood favorite serves up high quality burgers catered specifically to you. This build-your-own-burger bar allows patrons to customize the entire burger from the bun to the protein to the toppings and sauce. In addition to grass-fed beef, their menu also includes gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. If you’re searching for the best burgers in Pittsburgh, definitely check out Stack’d Oakland!
Pro tip: Burgers are half off from 9PM-midnight every Tuesday!
Eleven Contemporary Kitchen is another stop on this list that only features one burger…but we promise this one burger is worth it! The Eleven Burger is made using braised veal, black pepper bacon, crispy onions, and your choice of white cheddar, Point Reyes blue, goat cheese, or Emmenthaler Swiss. Guests may enjoy this juicy burger while dining inside of a rehabilitated warehouse! Plus, the interior pays homage to the city’s rich industrial background!
Burgers so tiny that they hardly have any calories? Sign us up! Located in Market Square, Slider Vibes is Pittsburgh’s newest burger bar dedicated to nothing but small bites and speciality shots! Our favorite is definitely the Steak House Burger (pictured left) complete with American cheese, caramelized onions, onion straws and steak sauce aioli. We also fell in love with the Impossible slider and shot flights!
