First of our list of new businesses in Philadelphia, the city’s newest GIANT supermarket opened in March of 2021. It’s so much more than a grocery store: the 65,000-square-foot space features a huge assortment of beer on tap, a well-appointed outdoor area with couches and fire pits, and a self-serve kombucha bar. Several local and national restaurants, including Mission Taqueria and Saladworks, are operating within the space, serving up grab-and-go meals and snacks. The store recently reopened after sustaining water damage from Hurricane Ida in September.

Middle Child Clubhouse

Center City luncheonette Middle Child’s enormous deli sandwiches and ultra-fluffy eggs have a devoted following. On October 16, 2021, owner Matt Cahn opened a hotly-anticipated second location, and it’s one of the new businesses in Philadelphia we’re most excited to visit. While the original restaurant is a small operation with a menu limited to breakfast and lunch sandwiches, Middle Child Clubhouse has much more to offer. There’s a 60-seat dining room and 50-seat bar area, and the menu includes the sandwiches that existing customers know and love along with a creative dinner menu, cocktails, and more.

Little Brew House

If you find yourself in Conshohocken, a happening town just west of the city, take the opportunity to visit Little Brew House (formerly Maria’s Pizza and Pasta). One of our favorite new businesses in Philadelphia for a relaxed night out, Little Brew House serves local craft beers alongside classic bar food including pizza, wings, and cheesesteak fries. Visit during happy hour (4:00pm–5:30pm Wednesday–Friday) for fantastic deals.

Down North Pizza

Delicious pizza, wings, fries, milkshakes, and lemonades aren’t the only things drawing customers to Down North Pizza, one of the best new businesses in Philadelphia. Down North is mission-driven: they exclusively employ formerly incarcerated individuals with the goal of reducing recidivism rates in the local community. All staff are paid at least $15 per hour, and the owners even provide rent-free apartments to employees in need. When you grab a slice at Down North Pizza, you’ll be nourishing the city as a whole.

South Philadelphia’s new Dodo Bakery is one of our favorite new businesses in Philadelphia for sweet treats. This adorable Asian bakery offers a variety of fresh, delicious desserts including Hong Kong-style pastries, breads, and custom cakes. It’s worth ordering a bubble tea or smoothie just for the Instagrammable cup featuring the bakery’s sweet logo of a cartoon bear holding a bun.
