  • | 7:00 AM

Where and How to Get Your Mardi Gras Party Started

Now that Dry January is behind us (and with it, our New Year’s Resolutions…let’s face it, working out 6 times a week was never going to happen anyway), it’s time to get serious about fun, and there’s no better time to start than that Fattest of all Tuesdays, Mardi Gras. While it’s not Nola, Austin is not a city to shy away from a celebration, so from King Cake to cocktails, there is no shortage of options to let those Bons Temps Rouler!???

Tiny Pies

The only thing cuter than a tiny pie? A Tiny King Cake, of course. These precious little guys are available for pre-order pick up February 19th-21st. Last day to pre order is February 17th at 5pm. Too cute to eat? Possibly, but it won’t stop us

Several locations throughout Austin. Hours vary per location

?Sawyer & Co

Sawyer & Co

The hugely popular East Austin diner will have plenty going on: in addition to the traditional cinnamon cream cheese King Cake for pre-order and crawfish boil options, there will be additional festivities. For Mardi Gras weekend, Lundi Gras (the Monday before), and Mardi Gras Day they will be offering not only drink specials, but also a reveillon style dinner (that’s a traditional French meal of total excess) to celebrate.

Wednesday-Sunday: 9a to 9p
Happy Hour: Wednesday – Friday: 3:30p – 6:30p

?Stuffed Cajun

Stuffed Cajun

Like the name suggests, this authentic spot is a jack of Cajun traders: grocer, butcher and specialty food store. Stay for lunch or dinner and sample the cheesy boudin balls, fried baskets of Cajun meats, po’boys, and burger, or take advantage of their tailgate party packs and catering options.

?French Quarter Grille

French Quarter Grille

This hidden North Austin gem does the classics right. Far from just serving up gumbo and etouffee, they excel at the decadent and indulgent dishes as well. Try the Blackened Steak Ponchartrain, which comes topped with lump crabmeat, crawfish tails, and shrimp in mushroom brandy cream sauce- definitely a more elevated take on typical Mardi Gras fare

Hours and Location

Tuesday – Firday: 11AM-2PM & 5PM – 9PM

Saturday: 5PM-9PM

?13000 Interstate 35 #600, Austin, TX 78753

?Evangeline Cafe

Evangeline Cafe

Anytime is a good time to hit up this South Austin institution, but of course it’s especially fitting to do during Mardi Gras. The Hank Williams platter alone, made up of Jambalaya, Crawfish Pie, and File’ Gumbo, not to mention the other Cajun and Creole options (various chicken fried specialties and desserts, such as bread pudding and pistolette) makes it worth a visit.

11:00 am – 9:30 pm

?8106 Brodie Ln, Austin, TX 78745

?Brewtorium

The Brewtorium

With its craft beers, cider, meads, and delicious German-style cuisine, this laid-back brewpub never disappoints, and Fat Tuesday is no exception. Stop by to sample Cajun food specials and complement them with suggested beer pairings. If they are anything like their last year’s offering of Shrimp Po Boys and Gumbo, you’ll be glad you came!

? Scholz Beer Garden

Scholz Beer Garden

Another German-style place that will be going Cajun for the occasion. They will be hosting their annual Crawfish Boil again this year: think crawfish with all the fixin’s plus several other New Orleans faves- Gumbo, Jambalaya, Boudin, and Shrimp Po’ Boys. “Abita Beer and Flor de Cana Hurricanes will be flowing from the bar, and live tunes from Urban Achievers Brass Band, The Numbers, & DJ Island Time will be performed on the Biergarten Stage.” And if that wasn’t enough, there will be King Cake versions of their famous giant pretzel. Psst: come early- crawfish is available by the pound until they run out
