It’s that time of year again! Philly is preparing for the holiday season with an exciting line-up of holiday pop-up bars, featuring some old favorites and new ones to look forward to. Whether you’re looking to be transported to a winter wonderland or just find a cozy spot to enjoy hot cocktails with some friends, there’s something for whatever level of festivity you’re feeling.
U-Ville, Uptown Beer Garden’s holiday pop-up bar, is back and better than ever. The center city outdoor bar has once again transformed itself into a winter wonderland, inspired by Dr. Seuss’ “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. It’s almost unrecognizable with the thousands of lights and Christmas decorations galore.
They’ve curated a holiday inspired cocktail menu, with drinks named like “U-Bilation”, “You’re a Mean One” and “The The The” (extra points if you get the reference). They’ve created an insulated space with a bar and tables, while peppering heat lamps throughout the large outdoor seating area to keep everyone comfortable while temperatures continue to plunge.
If you’re looking for a more sophisticated vibe, the Alpine Heights pop-up at the Assembly Rooftop is for you. Think less holiday and more apres ski, with a food and cocktail menu inspired by the Alps. The hot libations menu features winter classics with a modern twist, like the “Honey & Smoke”, their take on a hot toddy, with mezcal, sfumato amaro, ginger, honey and lemon; and a boozy hot chocolate with dark rum, lemon cordial, chocolate ganache, orgeat and milk.
Sonny Ingui, the executive chef at Urban Farmer Steakhouse, has curated an impressive food menu that you wouldn’t normally find at a rooftop bar. The line-up includes duck confit cassoulet, mini croque monsieurs, and flatbreads, literally made right in front of you, with toppings like nicoise olives, caramelized onions and fig vin cotto. The best part is you get to enjoy all of this with some of the best views of the city.
Fishtown’s favorite beer hall is getting ready for the holidays with the return of their mulled wines, spiked hot apple cider (with a choice of honey bourbon or cinnamon schnapps), and s’mores kits to enjoy at their multiple fire pits.
Want something a little sweeter? There’s always the option for a boozy (or non-boozy) milkshake! With flavors like Stroopwafel (Dutch caramel waffle), a vanilla shake with graham crackers, caramel syrup and honey whiskey; and Schokolade Brezel (chocolate covered pretzel), a chocolate shake with chocolate covered pretzel chunks, sea salt and kahlua. If you have any kiddos, look out for their “Frankford Hall-idays” weekends on December 10th – 11th and 17th – 18th, when they’ll have visits from Santa and crafts for the whole family to enjoy!
Prime Rib’s chic Library Bar has transformed into a “magical winter wonderland oasis,” featuring a custom holiday drink menu from Le, the creator behind Hop Sing Laundromat, and Stella Artois. You’ll find cocktails like “Tijuana’s Margarita” made with blanco tequila, ruby grapefruit syrup, Aperol, and lime; and the “G&G” made with gin, egg white, ginger syrup, lime and lemon peel.
A special holiday food menu from Prime Rib’s chef will also be available at the pop-up bar. You can sip under the sparkly snowflakes every Wednesday through Sunday, from November 19th through January 4th. Reservations are required and limited!
Tinsel is arguably Philly’s most instagrammable holiday pop-up bar. And this year it’s returned with even more decorations, if you can believe it. Many of the drinks come in seasonal glassware that you can take home, like mugs studded with reindeer and edible candy cane shot glasses. For every “Canned Good” cocktail they sell, Tinsel will donate $1 to charity. ‘Tis the season of drinking a sparkly cocktail out of an ornament!
Can you really consider yourself a true Philadelphian if you’ve never been to McGillin’s? Philly’s most popular Irish bar is getting a holiday facelift with its usual over-the-top holiday decorations, and a seasonal drink menu to match.
You’ll find drinks like the “Peppermint Bark”, a kahlua based cocktail with creme de cocoa, cream, and a peppermint rim; the “Poinsettia Punch” with champagne, orange liquor, and cranberry juice; and the “Eggnog Martini” with vanilla vodka, spiked eggnog, cream & nutmeg.
