A brief history of the Tampa Bay Rowdies

The Tampa Bay Rowdies are one of American soccer’s most iconic clubs, with roots stretching back to the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1975. From the very beginning, the Rowdies brought excitement, style, and a passionate fan base to Tampa Bay, earning the nickname “Soccer’s Original Bay Area Team.”

  • 1975 – The Rowdies are founded and win the NASL Soccer Bowl in their inaugural season, making an immediate impact.
  • 1975–1984 – NASL era: Rowdies play with flair and attract national attention, with stars like Perry Van der Beck and Mike Connell.
  • 1980s – Team competes in indoor soccer leagues, keeping Tampa Bay soccer alive after NASL folds.
  • 1990s – Rowdies’ legacy continues through exhibition matches and youth programs, inspiring a new generation of local soccer fans.
  • 2008 – Plans begin for a modern revival of the Rowdies name, reconnecting with the historic fan base.
  • 2010 – Modern Tampa Bay Rowdies officially launch in USSF Division 2 / NASL, bringing professional soccer back to St. Petersburg.
